I've been playing around with this netbook for a few days now, and I have been very impressed. For a netbook, it excels - especially when running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10. Disclosure: I have been a Linux user and admin for over 10 years, so I am partial to it. Linux may not be for everyone, especially long-time non-technical Windows users, but I really wanted to clear up some of the negative Linux comments in the reviews for this Netbook (I shook my head when I read one user call Grub a "parasite" ...).
One thing quickly about Grub. When you install another OS on a PC, you didn't think MS would allow you to just dual boot did you? A bootloader MUST be written to the MBR of your hard disk, and grub is among the finest of those, usually automating all OS selections on your disk. If you decide to dual boot with Linux, and change your mind later, you'll have to reformat those partitions that you formatted for Linux, and you'll have to reinstall the MS bootloader if you don't want to use Grub any more. Please keep that in mind before delving into dual booting. To make the decision easier, most Linux variants (UNR included) allow you to completely load and run the OS from a thumb drive so you can try it out before actually installing it on the drives.
On the single 1GB ram, I found WIN7 starter to be bloated on this netbook, and ran noticeably slow. It was usable, but for me, I found the slowness and bloat to get in the way. I quickly installed UNR 9.10, making sure to keep intact the backup partitions that have WIN 7 in case I want to revert back to WIN 7 later on. To recover, you simply boot into the recovery partition.
With UNR, you will loose the "gesture" functionality of the touchpad. This wasn't a game changer for me, I found the touchpad to be too small to really utilize gestures anyways. In fact, the touchpad is so flush with the case that it can take some getting used to. With UNR, I found the netbook to be very usable. Word processing, surfing the net, and some light video watching all were enjoyable experiences. The UI of UBR is perfect for a netbook, and I highly recommend it over installing a full desktop version of any OS.
With this netbook, I also purchased the 2GB Crucial ram. You can put in 800mhz ram, but you should know, the netbook will only run it at 667mhz. At first the Crucial ram would not boot in the netbook, but after updating the Bios, everything came up perfect. If you are in Windows you can update the Bios right from the OS, if you are on Linux, you will need to boot into FreeDOS on a thumb drive to update the Bios.
With 2GB, I find this netbook really opens up, and seems to fly. It feels like a full-blown laptop now, and I am very impressed. If you are on Win7, I would REALLY recommend this upgrade, it really changes the feel of the netbook and is VERY noticeable.
The keyboard of this netbook was quickly adjusted to - but it does take some time because the chicklets are so flush with each other. I find the touchpad to really be the only part of this netbook that annoys me. The battery life is excellent, and everything seems to work wonderfully. People should keep in mind, that this is a netbook: it is for word processing, web surfing, emailing, and computing on the go. It is not and should not be, a main computer. I couldn't imagine image or video editing on this thing, but I'm sure some people will! :)
Pros -
-Fast
-Excellent battery life
-Runs UBR with no issues
-93% keyboard is easy and comfortable to type on (typing this review on it right now)
-Very portable and small, and so light.
Cons -
-Can be sluggish on 1GB ram.
-Win7 seems to have plenty of bloatware pre-installed.
-Needed to update Bios to install ram.
-touchpad is a little annoying to use.
I've used the original Acer Aspire, and I can say, this one is heads and shoulders above. I love it - it's a lot of bang for the buck.
